Hi, I'm Mark. I explore how money, markets, technology, and consciousness shape the way humans create trust, meaning, and order. Welcome to my corner of the internet.
I'm a Toronto-based CFA Charterholder with a background in financial regulation, credit, fintech, and crypto — a fairly conventional opening for a bio that also involves Marshall McLuhan, Karl Polanyi, and the stranger edges of human experience. My intellectual home is the Toronto School: media theory, economic anthropology, and big unruly questions about how humans create trust, meaning, and order.
I'm interested in financial systems not only as technical infrastructures, but as social, psychological, and even spiritual technologies. Money, to me, is never just money. It is a medium, a symbol, a coordination device, and occasionally a very elaborate group hallucination with accounting standards.
Family history may be partly to blame. My great-grandfather worked for Simón Patiño, the Bolivian Tin King, so there is at least some ancestral precedent for being interested in commodities, empires, and strange monetary arrangements. Somewhere along the way the family lost the plot and I ended up in Canadian financial regulation, which is less cinematic but probably better for pension eligibility.
Views expressed here are my own and do not reflect those of the Bank of Canada.
